Samuel Noah was a playwright, and this controversial play ended his career. He was fined $400 for libel, was imprisoned when unable to pay, and upon his release became a lawyer. "An unrelieved flow of vitriol poured on the heads of numerous prominent New Yorkers, including Mordecai M. Noah" (Harap, Image of the Jew in American Literature, pages 261-263).
